   ASP Commends Appointment of Board Chairman and Former Senator Gary Hart to HSAC Vice Chairmanship 

 HartThe American Security Project (ASP) announced that ASP Chairman of the Board and former US Senator Gary Hart has been appointed Vice Chair of the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC), which advises the Secretary of Homeland Security on crucial national security issues. In response, ASP President Vice Admiral Lee Gunn, USN (Ret.) has issued a formal statement.

 American Security Project Releases Interim Report on Global Terrorism Trends

Are We WinningAn American Security Project mid-year update to their annual "Are We Winning?" report on global terrorism trends showed several trends that raise serious concerns about U.S. counterterrorism policy, including a dramatic increase in Islamic violence in the Middle East, a worsening situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan, new “hot spots” of violence in Somalia and Russia, as well as a dampening of the initial “Obama effect” in the Muslim world.

ASP Welcomes Dr. Evelyn Farkas as New Adjunct Fellow

Today, the American Security Project (ASP) welcomed Dr. Evelyn Farkas, former Executive Director of the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Prevention and Terrorism, as an Adjunct Fellow to the American Security Project.

American Security Project Hosts Forum on Legal Issues Confronting the New Administration in the “War on Terror”

Beyond Domestic LawThe American Security Project hosted a webinar and conference call with reporters and guests to discuss a series of new papers on legal issues confronting the incoming Administration in the “war on terror.” Participating in the call were ASP Senior Fellow Dr. Bernard I. Finel, Dr. Anthony Clark Arend, Professor of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University and Director of the Master of Science in Foreign Service in the Walsh School of Foreign Service, and Damon A. Terrill, former Attorney-Adviser in the Office of the Legal Adviser at the U.S. Department of State.

The participants specifically discussed challenges facing the Obama Administration on issues including detainees, interrogation, surveillance, ungoverned spaces, and military strikes on suspected terrorists abroad, as well as the need for a new sustainable, international legal framework. The forum and white papers are part of an part of an ongoing series of reports and perspectives being issued by the American Security Project on important issues confronting the incoming Administration.
